Clinical Studies of Thyroid Tumors

Abstract
We had experienced 359 cases of thyroid tumor for past ten years from 1964 to 1973 in Severance Hospital.
Among 359 cases in this studies, 272 cases were benign and 87 cases were malignant tumor 247 cases were female and 25 cases were male in benign tumor patients. Females were 73 and males were 14 in 87 cases of malignant tumor patient. Most of patients, benign and malignant, were in from¢¥ the second decade to the fifth decade. There were no differences in symptoms and physical findings between benign and malignant tumor patients. Also no differences were found in thyroid scanning, basal metabolic rite and thyroid function test. But benign tumors were soft and cystic with well capsulation. Malignant tumors were hard without capsulation.
Follicular type was predominant among benign tumors while papillary carcinoma was in mal-ignant tumors.
Selection of the proper treatment for carcinoma of the thyroid remains difficult. The choice of proper treatment can be based on exact interpretation of intraoperative findings particularly extent of tumor involvement and character of the tumor.
Frozen section must be utilized for the differentiation between benign and malignant tumors during operation which are hard to distinguish grossly.
